Working within the community through fundraising for local charities, team members participating in volunteer work or sponsored walks and runs. For Christmas 2019 we put together a donation of items for New beginnings Reading and also volunteered at the different events they offer. New beginnings aim is in the prevention and relief of poverty and financial hardship of people in Reading who are in need due to social or economic reasons, regardless of their religion or belief. Some of our team continue to support this fantastic local charity! We also joined in with another office in our building and donated Christmas gifts to those who will be in hospital on Christmas Day. We thought this was a superb idea – what a great way to spread some love at Christmas for those who are unfortunately in hospital and unable to be with their family.
In January 2020 we invested in some shares for the Reading Hydro CBS to build a turbine on Caversham weir. The aim is to convert the energy of the water at Caversham Weir into rotational kinetic energy using Archimedean screw turbines. These turbines will then turn our electric generators and convert that energy into hydroelectricity. So basically, generating green electricity from the power of the river. The well-being of our staff is extremely important to us, we aim to provide a happy and healthy environment to work in and ensure that all staff take time to look after themselves. We are all team players, and this is reflected in our attitude to work.
We recycle all recyclable materials, each member of staff has their own water bottle, not only to stay hydrated but to reduce the number of single use plastics we use (we have even switched to soap bars over hand pumps!). We aim to minimise our usage on single use items, we have recently transferred from our bold and bright envelopes for our thank you goodies to recyclable jiffy bags and envelopes. We will be working with our catalogue group for other ways to send out our catalogues (which can be recycled and are made from sustainable paper and eco ink) but until then we will keep promoting reuse wherever possible. Understanding that each small step we make, not just the business but us as individuals can have a huge impact on the environment.
We work with 100's of suppliers across the globe, where possible we will encourage our customers to pick environmentally friendly products from ethical factories that use sustainable manufacturing processes. We ensure that all the factories we work have similar values to us. Where possible we use UK manufacturers and suppliers reducing our carbon footprint.
